Key facts
Use the live declaration thresholds
On 13 August 2026, the Thai Customs Currency Declaration System displayed a declaration threshold above THB 450,000 for Thai currency and the relevant bearer negotiable instruments. It also displayed a threshold above USD 15,000 equivalent for foreign currency.
For combined instruments, the system displayed a threshold above THB 450,000 equivalent. These are dated readings of the live service, not permanent figures. Check the instrument categories on the current Customs screen rather than assuming that the word 'cash' captures every item covered.
Do not confuse declaration with permission
The same service displays a separate permission rule for taking Thai currency out of Thailand. It shows a threshold above THB 2,000,000 for Vietnam, Yunnan Province and countries bordering Thailand, and above THB 50,000 for other destinations.
Those departure-permission figures answer a different question from whether an amount must be declared. A traveler may therefore need to identify the currency, direction of travel, destination and instrument category before selecting the applicable process. This answer does not merge the two official pathways.
Check the boundary wording carefully
The displayed language uses 'above' the stated values. Keep that boundary wording when checking an amount, and use the live system if the amount or instrument sits near a threshold. Translation and instrument classification can carry legal consequences, so this page does not offer a private interpretation.
The Customs system also warns that a failure to declare or a false declaration can be a criminal offense. That makes the official service the decision point. An old screenshot, remembered figure or third-party summary should not replace the current Thai Customs instructions.
Recheck for the actual journey
Open the Currency Declaration System immediately before travel and match the direction, currency, combined value, instrument type and destination to its current questions. If the English and Thai wording creates uncertainty, obtain current guidance from Customs rather than resolving the ambiguity by guesswork.
This is a dated process summary, not legal advice and not permission to carry a particular amount. It does not freeze the thresholds beyond 13 August 2026 or determine whether a particular document or instrument falls within the service's legal categories.
